The Pilates method is an exercise system developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates. Joseph Pilates called his Method of Body Conditioning “Contrology”, today it is known as Pilates.
Pilates defined his method as the science and art of coordinated body, mind and spirit development through mild but rigorously disciplined physical exercises. “Through Contrology you first purposefully acquire complete control of your own body and then, through proper repetition of its exercises, you gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination associated with all your mental and subconscious activities.” To us Pilates is an art because it requires ability in execution and it is a Science because the Pilates Method is based on a systematic theory.
Therefore at its core the Pilates Method is a concept and philosophy and we believe that the exercises are the concepts and philosophy in motion. The Pilates exercises are patterns of movements rather then isolated movements, designed to exercise your body in the way your body moves in daily activities. Pilates did what we now call Functional Training….over 80 years ago! There are many approaches and styles in the Pilates method but the underlying concepts and philosophy are the common thread in all approaches.
Our extensive experience in the traditional Pilates method and other modalities, have given us the expertise to combine and create exercises that are new and innovative yet true to the Pilates method and philosophy.
